What is Modern Farmhouse Style?
Let’s first make sure we’re on the same page about what exactly modern farmhouse style is and is not so that you can be sure you’re in the right place. If you’ve watched fixer upper, you know what this home style is all about, and this show is most likely why you’re here trying to achieve the same look.
Modern farmhouse style is not country; it’s not city. Don’t let either word scare you away because it’s not just combining these two looks. Modern farmhouse style is actually a unique style of its own.
It is, however, a blend of rustic with modern and country with contemporary. Its wood tones, neutral wall colors, simple wall treatments, and earthy accents paired with modern metals and new and old farmhouse decor. The modern farmhouse style has quickly become the American favorite; it’s a classic style that young and old have fallen in love with.
The key to achieving this modern farmhouse style home starts with the paint color you put on the walls. Your home’s main color should be a neutral paint color with carefully selected accent colors. No bold colors here; instead, you’ll stick with different shades of soft whites for your whole house and couple that with neutral accent colors in a few key areas.
Let’s get to the good stuff and talk about these paint colors!
The Perfect Color for Modern Farmhouse Interior Walls
Achieving a modern farmhouse style in your home starts with painting the entire house (interior walls) one cohesive color. My absolute favorite white paint color is Sherwin Williams Alabaster. I know what you’re thinking, white walls sound stark, boring, and anything but cozy. But trust me! Alabaster is a beautifully soft white. The neutral beige undertones give this paint color a creaminess but not too creamy. It’s just the right amount of creamy to make it not white but also not yellow. Clear as mud, right?!
Don’t get too hung up on overanalyzing everyone’s opinions about paint colors and trying to understand the color components of paint colors. Instead, see for yourself. Grab a paint sample and get some on the walls in your home. After painting an entire room, you’ll agree that Alabaster is a winner, and now you’re ready to tackle adding color to each room through accent walls and decor.
Whole Home Farmhouse Color Schemes
Now that you’ve got your primary color for your home (Alabaster) let’s talk about some complimentary colors you can use throughout the rest of your house so that you have a cohesive look.
Here is my list of the best farmhouse paint colors:
- Sherwin Williams Alabaster
- Sherwin Williams City Loft
- Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter
- Benjamin Moore Pale Oak
- Sherwin Williams Sea Salt
- Benjamin Moore Hale Navy
- Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black
You may notice my list does not include the totally overused Agreeable Gray. That’s because I prefer an off-white paint color on the walls versus gray. If you are looking for warm gray paint color, I recommend checking out Benjamin Moore’s Collingwood. This color is warmer than Alabaster, perfect for creating a cozy feel in the bedroom. It does, however, require a lot of natural light, and depending on which way the room is facing, it can pull heavy purple undertones, so consider yourself warned.
The first step to achieving a modern farmhouse-style home is the paint colors you select for your walls. My go-to color palette is as follows:
- Main living areas: Alabaster
- Trim: Pale Oak or Revere Pewter
- Master Bedroom: Elder White or Collingwood
- Bathroom: City Loft
- Kids Bathroom: Sea Salt
- Accent Colors: Tricorn Black, Hale Navy, Bayberry (Fusion Mineral Paints),
Modern Farmhouse Exterior
Since the amount of natural light is completely different outside than in, you’ll probably use different colors than what you used on your interior walls. What looked great inside won’t necessarily look good outside, but the color palette is the same—a neutral base with dark accents. I suggest warm whites with black accents to carry your modern farmhouse look to your home’s exterior. If you’re looking to add a bit of color, your front door is the perfect place for a pop of color.
The Perfect Farmhouse Style Paint Color for Your Living Room
Based on what you’ve learned so far, and from the guide I gave for your whole home paint colors, can you guess the best modern farmhouse paint color for your living room (or family room if you prefer to call it that)?
If you guessed Alabaster, then you’ve been paying attention! Using this wall color for your main living areas provides a truly cohesive look and is the perfect start to achieving a modern farmhouse-styled home.
Modern Farmhouse Kitchen Cabinets Paint Colors
The kitchen is another area where you can add pops of color, not on the walls; those should be white, but rather on your cabinets! Your kitchen island is the perfect place to add color. Sticking with the modern farmhouse color palette, going with black, blue, or green colored paint is best. Again, think about your layout and how the color you pick will flow with the rest of your main living area.
For example, if you’ve done a Tricorn Black accent wall in your dining room, don’t paint your kitchen island Hale Navy. To keep your first floor cohesive, you would instead add black accent colors in the kitchen.
Accent Wall Paint Colors
My favorite paint colors for accent walls, such as shiplap, board and batten, or sponge painted + wall, are Tricorn Black and Hale Navy. I love the look of a white and black theme throughout the home and using white and navy in the bathroom.
Tricorn Black, Hale Navy, and Bayberry are also the perfect colors for painted furniture and another way to add a pop of color to your home without painting the walls. I haven’t talked much about a green shade of paint, but darker-earthy greens coordinate beautifully with a modern farmhouse style home.

Dining Room Paint Colors
The best modern farmhouse paint color for your dining room is, you guessed it, Alabaster! I’m starting to sound like a broken record, but the key to a modern farmhouse design is a neutral-cohesive look with pops of color added in through decor, furniture, and accent walls. Especially if you think about the layout of a modern farmhouse home, it’s an open floor plan, where there is probably not a clear division from one room to the next, which is why painting your main living areas all one color is a good idea.
Modern Farmhouse Style Bathroom Paint Colors
The paint color City Loft paired with navy accents is my favorite combination for a modern farmhouse bathroom. This paint color is a little less white than Alabaster, but it’s still a neutral white paint, that depending on the accents will pull more greige or beige. This wall color and navy accents give a little something different than the usual white and black combo without looking mismatched. Another way to maintain a cohesive look between your living spaces with your bathroom is to pair City Loft walls with dark green accents.
So, there you have it! You asked, and I delivered the best modern farmhouse paint colors for your entire home! After reading this, I hope you feel more confident about selecting paint colors for your home. I know it’s overwhelming, and whenever you think you’ve got it, you see something else on Pinterest that makes you change your mind.
I’m also guilty of getting stuck in analysis paralysis, and I’ve learned that it is best to stop researching and just go for it. When picking modern farmhouse paint colors, my best advice is to stick with the colors I’ve given you in this blog post.
