Now, here’s the honest tea: while both tools can drill holes and drive screws, they each have their specialties. As a DIY-er, we focus more on driving screws, so you’ll want speed and efficiency. The impact driver is our ride-or-die drill because it’s so easier to handle. It’s so smooth, even at high speed. 

Compared to the hammer drill, which sounds like the better choice because why wouldn’t you want the powerhouse? Well, the answer to that is the hammering motion is more difficult to work with. It requires a significant amount of strength and also a bigger learning curve to operate smoothly. I find the hammer drill awkward. My arms are not exactly super strong, so maneuvering the drill is more complicated than it’s worth.

Finding a tool that feels comfortable and safe for you and meets your project needs is most important. This drill checks all those boxes which is why it’s the best budget cordless drill. Orbital Sander Best for DIY Home Projects: The Best Budget Orbital Sander

Orbital sanders are great for projects big and small. You’ll end up using this handy tool again and again while updating your outdated house. It’s also incredibly useful for refinishing furniture. Which you’ll be hooked on soon enough. Because finding inexpensive old wood furniture and turning it into something modern and unique is the best way to furnish your house for very little money. Oh, and these types of projects are super satisfying.

Back to the best budget orbital sander. The first sander I ever used for the longest time was a hand-me-down from my dad. This thing was ancient. But guess what? It still worked! And based on what I’d seen from watching home renovation YouTube videos, I saw no difference in the outcomes between their new models and my older one. A smooth finish is a smooth finish, yes? 

I used this thing for the longest time. Until it finally bit the dust (ha, no pun intended!). I started researching options for the best random orbital sander because who doesn’t want the best? But, without spending a lot of time, I found there really was not a best. I saw little difference between my options. If you want to chuckle, read through the specs on sanders because they all say the same three things, but try to sell it like theirs is so unique. 

Where to Buy an Orbital Sander

So, I need a new sander and find that my local Walmart has one in stock. The next chance I had to devote to myself, I hopped in my car and headed straight there. Side note – do you know the benefit of shopping at Walmart for tools? No creepy men staring at you like they do at the hardware store. Also, no sideways looks like – what is she doing here? Walmart is our turf. And they sell tools. That’s a win! 

Once at the store, there were two options by two different brands and at two different price points. I picked this particular model because it’s a great value and was in stock exactly when I needed it. Once I’ve made up my mind, I need instant satisfaction. Also, just like you, I have limited time to work on projects, so when I need the tool, I need the tool.

For the types of projects we’re doing, when you break it down, a sander is a sander. It takes something rough and makes it smooth. I’m good as long as it’s easy to maneuver, has a variable speed control, and collects dust (psst, they all have these features). Although all the sanders will tell you they have a compact design, this one has a compact size for the part where you hold it. My hand fits nicely, so I have a good grip without over-stretching my fingers. My hand doesn’t fatigue during a more extensive sanding project.

Sanding Pad

When I started using this sander, I was amazed at how the round pad attaches. Like you just slap on the sandpaper, and off you go. That is good enough for me! But, after using my sander on many projects, the pad stopped sticking. I’d slap on the disc, turn on the tool, and the sanding disc would fly away like a frisbee. Except I wasn’t playing a game. Although comical watching this thing launch like some kind of weapon. I was irritated because my sanding project came to an abrupt halt.  

See, what was keeping the sandpaper attached is the same system that you and I know as Velcro, which is trademarked. So, the tool companies call it by its fastener type, which is hook and look. The scratchy part on your tool is the hook, and the after part on the back of your sandpaper is the loop. 

How I Damaged My Orbital Sander Pad

What I learned (I guess you could say the hard way) is I damaged my sanding pad because I had been applying too much pressure. I basically smushed my hooks into a smooth surface so the loop system had nothing to hold on to. Good thing I didn’t buy the fancier, more expensive tool because I’d be pretty pissed right about now if I had!

The point here is I want you to learn from my mistake. Let the tool do the work! Pushing harder down onto the sander while it’s sanding may make things move a bit faster, but you’re burning out the orbital sander and fast. Sounds easy enough, right? But I’ll admit it, I have a heavy hand, aka push way too hard when sanding. I found this sanding pad protector, which you can apply to the tool to prevent the hooks on the sander from melting away. 

The ultimate lesson here is I made the right call when buying the budget-friendly sander. You and I see we’re learning, and that’s ok. But learning on something expensive and then breaking because you’re learning sucks. For our situation, the best random orbital sanders are not the most expensive or the ones that have all the bells and whistles. It’s the one that gets the job done. Ones within our budget, so ya won’t be mad if you break it 😉

Dust Collection System

Oh, the dust a sander creates is something to be desired. Make that any renovation, the dust it creates is shocking. Living through renovations, you just get used to dust particles everywhere and on everything. I look at it as an excuse to clean less because there is no point.

Even with the dust collection bag, sanding dust is so fine that it escapes. It also creates a huge mess when you accidentally bump the dust bag (while it’s full), and all that sanding dust ejects into the air so fast and furious, as if it had a gale wind speed force behind it. This mess will happen to you just like it’s happened to me, and it’s ok, my friend. It’s just dust. A lot of dust.

There are fancy sanders that come with a hose attached to a dust collector. But just as it sounds, it’s more expensive. There is also a DIY hack to make your very own fancy dust collection system. You can easily turn your shop vacuum into a dust collection system by attaching a hose from the sander to the vacuum. Secure the vacuum hose at both ends, and boom! You’ve just made the best sander on a budget.

Variable Speed Setting

I can’t say I’ve ever used this feature on my orbital sander. Sure, it’s nice that there is the option to use a lower speed because it gives better control. But, when I’m sanding, give me the higher speed to get this job done. 

Sanding is super satisfying, but it gets old and fast. At first, it’s exciting to see what’s hiding under all the layers. But then my arms get tired, and I’m over it. I admit I get bored quickly, but I don’t think I’m alone. You know what it’s like to be so excited about your idea that you just can’t turn your mind off until it comes to life.

Although tempting, your best bet is to take the time and sand it right. That goes for every step in every project. Every step has a purpose. But especially the prep, it’s the most important part. It’s your foundation, the roots, the base on which your final projects’ durability relies. 

Power Source

My orbital sander is one handheld power tool I own that is not cordless. Yes, cordless tools are easier in some sense because you don’t have to fuss over a long extension cord. But, there is the battery life factor that I was concerned about with this particular tool. 

I do not own nor ever owned a cordless random orbital sander. Nothing against battery-operated tools. My other power tool recommendations are such, but I went with an electric (plug-in) sander for a good reason. 

I over-analyze everything, so this decision was no different. Here is how I came to my conclusion. 

Since I needed a sander for larger projects (refinishing my wood stairs, sanding paneling walls, etc.) I knew I’d be running this thing for a long time and didn’t want to worry about battery life. I know how fast some sanding projects can eat through sandpaper, so if it drained the battery even half as fast, that wouldn’t work for me. 

Different Types of Power Sanders

I wanted to add a bit about the different types of sanders if you’re on the fence about this orbital sander. I prefer the orbital sander, and so do most others, but so that you can feel even more confident in your power tool purchase, here is your quick education on the different types of power sanders. 

Belt Sander: sands forward in a straight line and best for leveling, shaping, trimming, etc.

Palm Sander: smaller type of sander that uses 1/4 sheet of sandpaper. It has a square sanding surface and is better for lighter woodworking projects.

Random Orbit Sander: spins in a random circular motion that helps to remove lots of layers quickly. The key word here is random because this motion prevents swirl marks, leaving a smoother finish than other orbital sanders.

As you can see, the main difference between these power sanders is the motion with which they create a smooth finish. There is also a difference in ease of use, especially when comparing a belt sander to the other options. 

Project Ideas with Your Power Sander

Your orbital sander is one tool you’ll find yourself reaching for over and over again. I try and stay organized by putting my tools back where they belong. Side note- this is the key to saving yourself from wasting time looking for the tool you need when you need it. 

My dad harped on me for this early in my project days, and I’m thankful he did! It’s a time and frustration saver. This sander however, never quite makes it back on the shelf because I always seem to need it again. It’s great because you’ll need it for big and small projects. Best Budget Cordless Brad Nailer: The Cordless Ryobi Nail Gun

The cordless Ryobi brad nailer is actually how I became interested in Ryobi tools. When I started working on projects, I borrowed my dad’s tools. He’s been doing this for decades, so his nailer is clunky and requires a compressor. I can handle heavy, but that stupid compressor is like nails down a chalkboard (no pun intended with the nails thing). It is so loud and always seems to kick on at the most inopportune times. And on top of it, the air hose is always tangling, and someone is constantly tripping over it. 

I’ve made it a thing over the last several years: I treat myself to a new power tool on my birthday each year. You know you’re obsessed with home projects when you get excited about tools. Some women want a KitchenAid mixer; I want a brad nail gun.

I bought a paint sprayer the first year of my tool tradition, and now I was eyeing a nail gun this year. I saw other women diy’ers using this nailer on Instagram (oh, the power of social media), and it caught my eye because it was completely cordless. No extension cord and no air hose! 

Curiosity got the best of me, so I went for it. I picked up this cordless nailer during one of Ryobi Days tool savings events and am so happy I did! I love this thing. A nailer has always been one of my favorite power tools, but this one, in particular, has turned out to be the best cordless brad nailer. You can read all the reasons why I love this tool; I’m going into detail here.

How Does the Cordness Ryobi Brad Nailer Work?

I don’t completely understand how the Ryobi nailer works other than Ryobi calling it Airstrike Technology. All I know is there are no compressors, air pressure hoses, or gas cartridges to deal with. And because of this, it’s so simple to grab your nail and get to work. Other than making sure you’ve filled your 18-gause brad nails, there is literally no other setup. 

You know how when you get a new tool, it takes you longer to figure out how to work the thing than it takes to get the task done? Yeah, it’s frustrating, I know. Well, with this nailer, there wasn’t any of that! I followed the directions on how to load the nails, attached my battery, and boom. I was ready to go.

Price Point of the Ryobi Cordless Brad Nailer

Building a tool collection can get costly and quick. But that’s why this one is the best budget brand nailer. It costs $109! And even better, as I said, I got it during one of their tool days events and got the multi-tool for free which made this so affordable.  

There is a brushless motor version of this, but it costs double. I didn’t totally see how the brushless option benefited me, so I saved my money and went with the non-brushless motor. The benefits of a brushless motor don’t really apply to DIYers because our projects are a bit smaller, and we use the tool less often than a pro. 

There is no compromise on performance with the brush option. The brushless has a longer battery life, which you may think that you’d want this option, but keep reading, and you’ll change your mind. The brushless motor version will also last longer. But listen, in reality, for how often we’re using this thing, it’s going to be plenty long enough before we wear this tool out.

The lower cost of the brushed motor version makes this the best nail gun on a budget. I won’t pretend to know what I’m talking about between these two options, but here’s a great article about brushed vs. brushless motors if you want to learn more.

Battery Life on Battery-Powered Nailers

I get it; you may be worried about using cordless tools for home projects because of their battery life. The last thing you want is to run out of power mid-project. But I don’t know how to say it other than the longevity of this lithium-ion battery on this thing is incredible! The fact that it’s a lithium-ion battery means absolutely nothing to me; all I know is this cordless nailers battery power has surpassed my expectations. 

I am in the habit of always keep an extra battery pack charged up and ready to go for larger projects (duh, I know, not rocket science). But I have yet to need to run out of juice mid-project. This thing last’s a long time, something like 1100 nails, before it runs out. This nailer has no problem powering through diy projects. Add to this the list of reasons why this is the best brad nailer.

Is the Ryobi Nailer Light Weight?

Tools can start to feel like dead weight, especially after you’ve been working for a while and your arms start to fatigue. You’ll get stronger as you do more projects, but holding your arms over your head or at those awkward angles is tiring, no matter how strong you get. 

That’s why it is important to consider the weight of your power tools. Some of the options out there are on the heavy side. One advantage of the brushless nailer option is the weight of the motor is less, but again, this slight difference was not enough to make its doubly high price worth it. My Ryobi cordless nail gun is compact, making it light enough so my arms don’t fatigue. 

Does the Ryobi Cordless Nailer Have a Depth Adjustment Feature?

Another useful feature is the depth adjustment wheel. It does exactly that; it adjusts how deep the nail will go into the wood. It’s useful when working with harder woods because it will make sure you have enough power to get the nail in. 

The big difference I’ve noticed is how it affects the surface of the wood. It helps to keep the surface of the wood nice and smooth by preventing splitting or divots on the wood surface. The harder you drive that nail in, the larger the hole appears on the surface. Using too much force to drive the nail is technically called overdriving. 

Regardless of what you call it, you don’t want to do this because it’s more work to patch and doesn’t look as nice. Working smarter, not harder, is my motto. So this depth of drive dial is super helpful to keep your wood surface looking good! 

My only complaint about this Ryobi model is that I wish this dial had markings to indicate your selected depth. I’m considering adding my own markings to tell where I’m at because this would make things that much easier and more efficient.

The Different Firing Modes of the Ryobi Brad Nailer

Another handy feature is the two different firing modes. Both are easy to operate, and it depends on the type of project you are working on for which mode is best. 

The one I use most of the time is to use the trigger pull for each nail. So sometimes, when I am being exceptionally particular, this mode allows me to be as finicky as I want because the nail won’t fire until I pull the trigger. The trigger is super smooth and doesn’t have any kickback. 

The other mode is better for speed because contact triggers the nail to fire. So you hold the trigger pull, and bump the nailer onto the surface, and each time you do, a nail fires into place. 

Are Brad Nailers Noisy?

Something I noticed about this nailer compared to the compressed air one is how quiet this thing is. First, you’re not dealing with the air compressor kicking on at any moment without warning (and scaring the crap out of you every time). And second, when firing this nailer, the sound coming from the tool itself is much quieter. 

I know remodeling, building, and using tools are loud, but something easier on my ears is a bonus. I love to listen to podcasts and music while working, and quieter tools make that a little easier.

Is There a LED Light on the Ryobi Brad Nailer?

Sometimes those little additional features with tools are pointless and have no real benefit like the tool belt clip that comes with this model. Personally, this has no use to me. I guess I’m just not that fancy. 

The led light on this nailer is actually really helpful! Initially, I thought the light would be one of those useless features. I wondered why I needed that because I’m not working in the dark. 

Having the area directly around where you are nailing illuminated is pretty handy. It makes seeing what you’re doing that much easier, which makes your nail placement much more accurate. The light is also extra helpful when working in tight spaces or at awkward angles.

Why You Need a Brad Nailer vs. a Finish Nailer

I was confused between a brad nailer and a finish nailer because, based on the name, why wouldn’t I want the finisher?! Like, who’s this Brad guy, and why would I want Brad over the finisher? 

Without knowing anything and going solely off the name, I’m going with the finish nailer because, from the sounds of it, it would help me get my project done. But what the finish nailer does is more literal because its purpose is tacking back up the trim and moldings. Which I guess is

But these more inexpensive options will only lead to frustration because they lack cut accuracy. The precision that is so great about this saw just isn’t there in the cheaper brands. Having to repeat a cut due to an error because of the saw wastes time and money.

I had a hand-me-down for the longest time and wasted more time and money on wood because the tool never cut as I set it. The cheaper tools are the same as my hand-me-down; unreliable. I’m talking about miter cuts, bevel cuts, and chop cuts. I haven’t tackled anything like crown molding, but when I feel confident enough, I’ll have the perfect tool to make the most accurate cuts.

I mainly use my miter saw for chop cuts. And you’re correct if you’ve figured out that a circular saw or table saw could do the same thing (more about the circular saw in a minute). But! What makes the miter saw so great is it’s much less intimidating than these other saws. I will add that I’ve found my cordless tools to have plenty of power. So if you’re worried about that, I’d say it’s ok to stop worrying.
