In this post, I’m sharing how we came up with a bedroom design that’s bold, functional, and full of personality—perfect for a pre-teen who’s on the verge of those teenage years.
Whether you’re trying to create a room that’s both stylish and fun or figuring out how to store all those Lego creations, I’ve got some ideas for you. Let’s take a look at the inspiration for his room!

Preteen Boys Bedroom Ideas
Designing a pre-teen boy’s bedroom is one of those fun yet challenging projects that feels like balancing on a tightrope. They’re not little kids anymore, but they’re not quite teens either, and their interests seem to change almost overnight.
The goal? Create a space that’s cool enough for right now but can also grow with him as he does (because we all know how fast that happens!).
But this room is extra special because it’s his space—it’s the first time he’ll have his own room, and I wanted to make it something he’d be proud of. A place where he’d want to hang out, maybe even to get away from his little brother when he needs some space.
So, I tried to give him as much say as possible while still holding on to my A-type control tendencies (because, let’s be real, letting go isn’t easy!). It was all about finding that sweet spot between his ideas and my design-obsessed side, making sure the room was not only functional but also truly reflected his personality.
Bedroom Before
Before diving into the fun design elements, we had to tackle some serious work. We removed two layers of the old ceiling and walls (here are the full details on demo)—literally, pegboard! By raising the ceiling a bit and pushing the walls back, we gained a few extra feet in both directions. This made a huge difference in making the most of this funky, sloped cape room, giving us a much better space to work with for the rest of the design.
Color Palette
For his bedroom, he wanted bold colors—black, white, and red accents—which happen to be my favorites too. I was excited about the choices but a bit nervous about how they’d work in a room with shorter ceilings and sloped walls.
He initially wanted the entire room painted black, but I had to put my foot down. I wasn’t ready to tackle painting the shiplap ceiling and dealing with those tricky cracks. In the end, we settled on a black accent wall.
The black and white base will create a sleek, modern look that’s versatile and can adapt to changing tastes. The red accents will add a burst of energy and personality, making the room feel vibrant and dynamic.
Although the room’s unique shape might present some challenges, this palette is neutral enough to easily update with new accessories or artwork as his interests evolve. It’s a stylish and adaptable choice that will keep the room feeling fresh and personalized for years to come.
Bed Frame
While I’ve always admired Jenny Lind spindle beds, they didn’t quite fit his trendy, cool style. But when I came across a black metal bed frame at a thrift store for just $40, it felt like fate. It has a more masculine vibe and the price was unbeatable. I ended up buying it and storing it for a full year, but I didn’t mind at all because I knew this find was meant to be!
This frame features straight lines and a sleek, square design, giving it a contemporary feel compared to the curves of traditional spindle beds. It’s sturdy and modern, making it a perfect match for his room’s vibe. It makes a statement without being overpowering, striking the right balance between bold and airy.
The black metal frame ties in seamlessly with the black accent wall and contrasts nicely with the white walls, while the red accents (which we’ll also use in his bedding) pop against its clean lines. And, I got incredibly lucky that the height of the headboard fits perfectly under the sloped wall.
Painted Wood Floors
After two attempts to sand the floors, including stripping them entirely, the thick shellac just wouldn’t budge. So, I threw in the towel and decided to paint the floors instead (full how-to tutorial coming soon!).
My son actually agreed to a fun design, similar to what Megan Miller did in her kiddo’s room makeover with a checkered pattern. I think it’ll add a playful touch that ties in perfectly with the rest of the room’s vibe. It’s been quite the journey, but I’m excited to see how it all comes together!
Bedding + Bold Patterns
For the bedding, I drew inspiration from Jenna Sue’s lake house and the I Spy DIY summer camp guest room. I loved their layered look and mix of patterns—geometric designs, stripes, and a classic black and white windowpane pattern. This is also the perfect spot to add the red accents, which will really pop against the black and white base.
I found a red throw, a vintage-washed blanket, and a matching accent pillow cover (which I’m obsessed with because it’s pretty unique!) that are going to be perfect.
The throw features a cool Swiss cross pattern, which I’ll pair with windowpane sheets for a funky contrast. The cross design adds some fun to the classic windowpane pattern.
I also snagged the Serena and Lily vintage-washed blanket and pillow cover while on vacation. I love finding pieces like this in special places because every time I see his bed, it reminds me of that trip.
Desk Space + DIY Wallpaper
Since this room already had plenty of closet space with the built-ins (more on this exciting use of space, keep reading!), I decided to transform the original closet into a cozy desk nook. It’ll be the perfect spot for him to draw, do homework, and display some of his favorite things.
I’m also adding a painted accent wall, inspired by this DIY brushstroke design to mimic wallpaper. This will give the nook a creative touch and make it feel like a special corner just for him. This dedicated study space will not only be functional but also add a bit more of his personality to the room.
Wood Elements
To add warmth and texture to the room, I’m mixing in some wood elements. I teetered between dark and light wood options, but when I found these dark wood and metal bedside tables—for free!—it was a no-brainer.
Seriously, sometimes it feels like the universe is just looking out for me. They add a perfect blend of rustic charm and modern edge, fitting right in with the room’s vibe. The dark wood contrasts beautifully with the black and white theme, while the metal details tie in with the bed frame.
Combining these wood pieces with the moody accent wall adds depth and character to the space. It’s all about creating a cozy, inviting atmosphere that still feels stylish and contemporary.
Personalizing With Art and Decor
He has so many interests—Messi and soccer, football and the Bills (go Bills!), fishing, sharks, and war planes. He already has some great artwork related to these passions, so my plan is to incorporate all of them into the room.
I’m thinking of going with a college-style display or creating different themes on different walls. This way, we can highlight each of his interests uniquely while keeping the room cohesive. My A-type tendencies usually lean towards having one cohesive theme, but I’m going to do my best to embrace his many interests and blend them in a way that feels true to his style.
I’ll use frames that make it easy to update as his tastes evolve, so the room can grow with him and always feel like a true reflection of what he loves. It’s all about making his space personal, adaptable, and totally him.
Built-In’s
To make the most of the room’s short cape walls, we’re planning to add built-in storage—a smart way to use up that tricky dead space. My dad’s done this kind of thing for clients so many times, but this project will be special because he’ll be doing it for his grandson.
To maximize the space even more, we’re adding open shelves above the drawers, perfect for his Legos, books, and other cool stuff. It’ll keep everything organized and give him a spot to show off his favorite things. It’s going to be a great mix of function and personal touch, making the room feel even more like his own.
>> Make sure you’re on my list to see how the room turns out—I can’t wait to show you!
Designing this room has been such a fun experience and a bit of a learning curve for me. Letting someone else—especially my pre-teen—have a say in the design elements was a new challenge, but it’s been incredibly rewarding to see him take control, express his opinions, and find his style, which truly reflects his personality in the space.
It’s taught me to be more flexible and embrace the mix of styles and interests that make the room uniquely his. I can’t wait to see it all come together and to watch him grow in this space!
