DIY Valentines Decorations: Easy Valentines Candle Ideas

Valentines Day DIY Heart Candles

These heart taper candles are such a sweet Valentines Day craft, almost no mess and totally budget-friendly. If you’re looking for a Valentines candle idea or easy DIY Valentine decor ideas, this one’s for you.

I kept seeing heart candles everywhere — Pottery Barn, Anthropologie, even My Texas House at Walmart. I loved the look, but once I realized I needed six, I had that feminine urge to make them myself, just because I knew I could.

This DIY Valentine’s decoration took just a few minutes, was so easy, and I was way more satisfied with the results than I expected. After making these, we had a pre-Valentine’s Day candlelit dinner that night, and it was funny to see the boys’ reactions. I guess we’ve never done something like this before, so they were all silly about having “fire” at the dinner table. I’m planning to keep these out through Valentine’s Day because they’re just too cute.

  • Taper Candles: I snagged mine from Target, but other affordable options are Walmart and the Dollar Store.
  • Permanent Maker: I linked the brand I used from Michaels. See the image above for the colors I went with. There are so many options here—from monochromatic looks to pinks, reds, and even gold!

How to Make DIY Heart Candles

  • Lay out your supplies: Set your taper candles on a flat surface and have your permanent markers ready. Make sure you’re using markers that will actually stick to a waxy surface, regular markers won’t work here.
  • Draw your hearts: Use the permanent markers to draw hearts directly onto the candles. I started at the top and worked my way down, rotating the candle slightly as I went. Then I moved on to the next color and repeated the process. I finished with the last color, filling in any empty spots from top to bottom. I also made sure to vary the heart sizes for a more organic look.

  • Let them dry completely: Try not to touch the drawn hearts until the marker is fully dry, or the design can smudge. This can get a little tricky as you fill up the candle with hearts, but I found that resting the bottom of the candle against my stomach and gently pinching the top between my fingers worked really well.
  • Display or gift: Once dry, your heart candles are ready to use as decor or wrap up as a sweet Valentine’s Day gift.

Quick Tips to Remember:

  • Don’t overthink it! The imperfect ones are usually the cutest.
  • Use markers made to stick to waxy surfaces.
  • Don’t touch the candles until they’re completely dry.
