DIY Furniture Makeover Step-by-Step
Start here –> Finding Furniture to Makeover
Finding furniture to makeover is easier than you might think! Thrift stores, yard sales, and even those free piles on the curb can have some real gems. And don’t forget to look around your own home—you might already have the perfect piece waiting for a little love.
Refinishing real wood is so much easier, so if you’re unsure whether you’re working with real wood, fake, or veneer, don’t worry! Check out these tips here to help you spot quality pieces that are worth the effort.
Gathering Supplies
I’m sharing my must-have tools list to help you start your makeover on the right foot! This guide is all about focusing on the essentials that actually work, so you can avoid wasting money on unnecessary tools and stick to what you need for a successful project.
Here are my trusted recommendations and direct links to the top-rated furniture makeover tools and supplies I swear by.
Prepping Old Furniture
The first step in every furniture makeover is cleaning, and my go-to product for this step is a degreaser. You’ll also need a clean cloth and some warm water which I use to wipe everything down once I’ve done a round or two of the degreasers.
Now’s a good time to remove any hardware and hinges. Just make sure to set them aside in a safe spot so they’re easy to find when you need them later.
Stripping Old Wood Furniture
Stripping wood furniture is seriously so satisfying. That is, if you’re following the right advice. Because if you’re not, then it’s frustrating, messy, and expensive!
To learn all about stripping paint and stain head to this post that will teach you the easiest paint stripping strategy. Remember, not all wood furniture needs stripping, but it always needs sanding!
If you’re unsure when to strip versus when to sand, I’ve got some super helpful tips just for you! This exclusive info is available only in my Ultimate Furniture Makeover Guide. Grab your copy to stop second-guessing and approach your projects with total confidence!
Sanding Wood Furniture
The next step in your furniture makeover is sanding, which is definitely an art—especially if you’re aiming to stain the wood. That’s why I often recommend starting with paint instead of stain when you’re new to furniture makeovers.
Here’s a quick guide to sanding wood:
- Use a coarse-grit sandpaper and a random orbital sander, always sanding with the grain of the wood.
- Sand the entire surface, then switch to a higher grit. Gradually work your way up to finer grits (like 120, 220, 320, and possibly higher) for the smoothest finish.
- After sanding, make sure to remove all the dust. A tack cloth, clean rag, or even a leaf blower if you’re outside will do the trick.

Step 6: Priming + Painting Wood Furniture
My go-to primer is Zinsser 123. This is the only primer I use for all my furniture makeovers because it covers wood knots, tannins, and sticks to surfaces like no other! It may cost a little bit more, but I’m always satisfied with the results.
The two most important things to know about priming and painting furniture are:
- Do not skimp and buy a cheaper primer. Aside from sanding, the quality of your primer is essential to your paint sticking.
- Two coats of primer and two coats of paint. Never less!
- Here is a complete guide that goes into full details about furniture painting and painting wood.
After you’ve applied one coat of primer, let it dry for at least an hour, and then give it a light sanding using 220 grit or higher. The trick is to apply gentle pressure; you’re doing the slightest sanding to smooth out any tiny paint imperfections and to scuff the surface.
After giving the area a quick wipe down with a clean cloth, you’re ready to add a second coat of primer. Once the second coat of primer is dried, repeat the light hand sanding step from above.
Finally, follow the same steps you did for priming to paint your furniture.

Say goodbye to piecing together information from different sources and hello to clear, straightforward steps that save you time, avoid costly mistakes, and help you achieve the transformation you’ve been dreaming of.
Staining Wood
Staining wood is trickier than painting, and honestly, if you’re a beginner, I do not suggest you attempt this quite yet. I have had years of experience in furniture refinishing and stain still trips me up, so the best option is mastering the basics before you jump to staining.
Now, if you’re anything like me, I usually do the opposite of what I’m told. So, for your curious mind, here are my best staining wood tips.
Sealing Wood
I’ll admit, I rarely seal my painted furniture makeovers because I don’t typically have issues with chipping paint (just follow my exact process for great results!). However, there are times when skipping a topcoat isn’t ideal, and protecting your work is crucial. Leaving it unsealed can lead to potential water damage or reduced durability.
You have a few options for protective finishes—polyurethane varnish, wax, and shellac. Each one serves a different purpose and offers various benefits depending on your needs.
Here are a few topcoat tips:
- Poly and shellac are the most protective and wax is the least.
- Use a water-based poly to prevent yellowing.
- The way your wood looks wet is a good gauge on how it will look with a poly topcoat.
- Even if the product claims it won’t change the look of your wood—beware! It most likely will.
Finishing Touches
Once your sealant has fully cured (be sure to check the label for specific curing times), you can reattach your hinges and hardware. Important: Curing is different from drying!
Here are a few options for updating hardware:
- Clean and keep your current pieces – Sometimes a good cleaning is all they need.
- Refinish what you have – Use spray paint or Rub’n Buff to give your hardware a fresh look.
- Buy new ones – Just make sure to match the original hole sizes to avoid extra work.
For more advanced makeovers, you’ll learn how to repair holes if you decide to choose different-sized hardware. But for now, I suggest keeping things simple and sticking with these beginner-friendly steps.
