The kid-friendly hiking trails make it perfect for a fun family outing. With its breathtaking scenery, delightful local spots, and accessible trails, Chimney Rock promises a memorable adventure for everyone.
Let’s dive into the highlights and must-see spots!
A Glimpse into History
This iconic rock formation gained fame as a filming location for the 1992 movie Last of the Mohicans. The dramatic cliffs and sweeping views provided a perfect backdrop for the film’s epic scenes, highlighting the area’s rugged beauty and historical significance.
Getting To Chimney Rock
Upon arriving in Chimney Rock town, we easily spotted the park entrance. Cell service can be spotty, but the entrance is hard to miss—just look for it on your right as you approach the edge of town coming from Black Mountain.
Once you pass under the park entrance gateway, you’ll be immediately wowed by the views—cross a bridge over the river and start your climb. You’ll drive a few miles along winding forest roads before reaching the ticket plaza.
After paying, continue up the switchback roads through the forest. Take your time and soak in the scenery! When you reach the parking area, you can choose between the lower or upper lot—both offer easy access to the park trails.
Hiking Trails at Chimney Rock
Chimney Rock offers a variety of trails that cater to all fitness levels, ranging from easy, family-friendly paths to more challenging hikes. The best part? You don’t need to tackle the toughest trails to enjoy incredible views—there are plenty of spots that offer stunning scenery with minimal effort.
Whether you’re looking for a leisurely walk or a more adventurous climb, there’s a trail for everyone to enjoy without missing out on those breathtaking vistas!
Outcroppings Trail
After we parked, we headed straight to the Outcroppings Trail—this one that takes you right up to Chimney Rock. There are 494 steps to the top, but don’t let that number scare you off; it’s not as bad as it sounds. There were plenty of spots to stop, take a breather, and just soak in the views (and some shade, which was much appreciated).
There’s also an elevator that takes you up to the Sky Lounge, so if stairs aren’t your thing, you’ve got options. But trust me, the views along the stairs are worth it! Here is the cool cave that takes you to the elevator.
Grotto, Subway, and Pulpit Rock
We made sure to check out all the little stops along the way, like Grotto, Subway, and Pulpit Rock.
The subway was this cool little nook that you actually have to crouch down and crawl through!
The walkway to Pulpit Rock felt like floating in the air! The narrow bridge, perched very high above the ground, offers stunning views that make you feel as if you’re suspended in the sky.
Chimney Rock
After making our way up the Outcroppings Trail, we finally reached the final climb to Chimney Rock itself. This part is super exciting because you can see the iconic rock formation just ahead, and it feels like the grand finale of the hike!
Once you’re up there, you’re greeted with 360-degree views of the Hickory Nut Gorge, Lake Lure, and the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains—it’s absolutely breathtaking. There’s a flag waving proudly at the top, which makes for a perfect photo op, and you can really see just how high up you are from the tiny town below.
The top of Chimney Rock has plenty of space to spread out, take in the views, and snap some photos. It’s the kind of view that makes you forget the climb because it’s just that good. The cool breeze up there is a nice touch, too—it feels like you’re on top of the world.
We spent some time just soaking it all in before moving on, and it was definitely one of those moments that made the whole trip worth it.
Exclamation Point
After soaking up the views from Chimney Rock, we decided to keep going and take the Exclamation Point Trail. The trail itself was a little more strenuous than the first part, with some steeper climbs and more steps, but it was totally manageable.
What’s really cool about the Exclamation Point Trail is that it gives you a completely different perspective of Chimney Rock itself. As we climbed higher, you start to see the rock from new angles that you just can’t get from the main viewing area.
Here’s a peek at the stunning views from the top of Exclamation Point Trail! The sweeping scenery from up here is unreal, with rugged mountain peaks and the valley stretching out below. It feels like you’re on top of the world, taking in all the beauty that the North Carolina mountains have to offer. A perfect reward after the climb!
Opera Box and Devil’s Head
Here’s the view from the Opera Box: an amazing spot that offers a front-row seat to the stunning scenery below. Though it’s a tight space, accommodating only a handful of people at a time, it truly lives up to its name with a view as dramatic and intimate as an opera box.
Can you guess why they call this one the Devil’s Head? The rock formation has an uncanny resemblance to a sinister-looking face, complete with features like eyes, a nose, and a mouth. Its eerie appearance, perched dramatically against the landscape, gives it an unmistakably devilish vibe that’s both fascinating and a little unsettling—a perfect example of nature’s own sense of mischief!
Skyline Trail
We decided to skip the Skyline Trail to save time for exploring nearby towns. Instead, we headed back down, pausing at Vista Rock viewpoint before taking Crevice Pass back to the Outcroppings Deck. From there, we took the stairs down to access the Hickory Nut Falls Trail.
Things were much easier and faster going down than the climb up!
Hickory Nut Falls
The Hickory Nut Falls Trail was a pleasant, easy walk with a mix of dirt and gravel paths. It’s a nice, relaxing forest trail that’s perfect for cooling off after a few hours of hiking.
The falls themselves were a bit smaller on the day we visited—probably due to the end of the hot summer—but they were still stunning. The sight of the cascading water was refreshing, and it made for some great photo ops. It was the perfect spot to unwind and take in the natural beauty.
After enjoying the falls and soaking in the last of the stunning views, my legs were definitely feeling those earlier stair climbs. So, to make our way back to the car, we decided to skip the steps and took the trail that heads directly to the parking lot. It was a relief to have that option, especially after our two and a half hours of hiking and exploring.
We could have easily spent more time if we’d packed a lunch and tackled additional trails like Skyline and Four Seasons. And while there’s also the Animal Discovery Den and the Woodland Adventure Trail, we decided to give those a pass this time around since we didn’t have kids with us.
Exploring Chimney Rock Town
After our park adventure, we took a quick drive through the town of Chimney Rock. This charming town is just outside the park’s entrance—literally dropping you right onto the main street. With its old Western mountain vibe, it adds a unique touch to the experience. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy some local flavor after a day of hiking.
The town is situated along a river, providing plenty of riverfront dining and drinking options. It’s a fantastic spot to kick back, grab a beer at a local brewery, and soak in the scenic views with a tasty meal. For the kids, there’s also a small amusement park for some extra fun.
Quick Trips Nearby
Lake Lure
Making a right turn out of Chimney Rock Park, we headed to Lake Lure, just a short drive away. This picturesque spot offers stunning lake and mountain views. We visited during the week before Labor Day, so some places were beginning to wind down for the season.
Even so, it was clear why Lake Lure is a summer hotspot. The town beach, with its two water slides plunging right into the lake, looked like so much fun for the kids.
There were plenty of pontoon boats on the water, and with a gorgeous inn and a beachfront snack bar, it’s easy to see why this place draws so many visitors during the summer.
Bat Cave
On our way out of town, we stopped in the tiny town of Bat Cave, which you might miss if you blink! Despite its size, it’s known for its quirky thrift stores and one-of-a-kind finds, making it a worthwhile stop if you’re in the area.
Of their two charming stores, one was in a gorgeous old house, and the other was connected to the post office—both right up my thrifting alley. The owner of the Hip Hen was incredibly friendly, and her shop had a fantastic collection of unique items.
